Four Cones

  • Willow
  • Cone
  • South West

'Four Cones' was commissioned by the River Parrett Trail Project and funded by the R. P. T. Partners, which include South West Arts, English Nature and the R.S.P.B.. Clare created the Cones in 1996 assisted by weaver Natalie Silk. They are positioned on the River Parrett Trail, which runs from Cheddington in Dorset across the Somerset levels to the sea. The sculptures are designed to herald the willow country as this is where the trail crosses the river to the willow growers, basket and hurdle makers in Stoke St. Gregory.

The vertical rods in these 4 metre high Cones are living and they include 20 varieties of willow with different coloured barks. Each Cone concentrates on different coloured barks including bright yellow, green, red and dark brown stems.

The fresh shoots were trimmed each year to produce bushier growth and to maintain the forms. In 2002 the horizontal willow woven around the vertical living rods was removed. The new living shoots were woven in to replace these. The living rods have thickened so much that this has created wilder twisting woven tree trunks.
