Leather Font
'Font' is 60cm high and 80cm wide and is made with silver foil topped leather, dyed red on the back and woven with natural cord. It uses a one piece pattern with a pairing weave and overlapping crown. It is for sale at Bill Amberg's shop for £3030.
This rounded form reflects Clare's interest in organic shapes which she explores with willow and wire sculpture. Working with the silver covered leather gives a dramatically different effect to the other leathers. From a distance it appears rigid and made of metal but near to it is surprisingly soft, moving in and out when touched. Though squishy, it always regains its original shape.
It is part of a collection of leather vessels Clare made in collaboration with leather designer, Bill Amberg, in 2003. Using his leather off-cuts, there are thirty unique pieces made with three kinds of weaving techniques and many kinds of leather. The pieces are both functional containers and intriguing art objects, see other 'leather vessels'. |
