Shelter Skelter
- Living Willow
- Shelter
- East England
'Shelter Skelter' is on the Bourne Wood Sculpture Trail, Bourne, Lincolnshire. It was made in 1997 with a variety of coloured living willow and is 10 metres across and 2.5 metres high in the centre.
The proposal drawing is shown here along with the actual piece in winter and a close-up of the shelter, outside and inside.
It is set at a junction of two pathways, providing a place to rest. The fence is planted in a spiral and varies in height, swooping up and down as if moving.
The shelter in the centre is inspired by drystone bories seen in France and on a smaller scale the traditional beehive. The angle of the weave and the uprights also create a spinning effect.
